remakes are a lazy cash grab

So, I see this Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Remake pop up and I can’t help but glare at the screen. A remake. Really? Are we so creatively bankrupt that revamping old games with slightly prettier visuals and streamlined features is the best thing we’ve got? It’s like using duct tape on an old car and calling it brand new. How about something actually new instead of rehashed nostalgia trips?

People rave about how Estelle and Joshua’s journey feels ‘as relevant and heartfelt as ever’—as if they didn’t feel exactly the same in the original version. Do we need updated graphics to remind us of this? Or perhaps they think we all suffer from short-term memory loss and need constant reminders wrapped in shiny packages to appreciate what was perfectly fine to begin with. Seriously, modern RPG standard? That’s laughable. I’ve seen them use this exact line for every new paint job of an old game they churn out.

Why bother even purchasing these so-called ‘modernized’ versions when all you’re getting is a re-dressed nostalgia fest? They slap on a new coat, flavour the combat flow with ‘quality-of-life’ features that should’ve been there from the start, and charge you full price. It’s like paying a gourmet price for fast food; sure it looks better, but it’s still the same junk that filled the craving back in the day. They’ll say it’s for introducing new audiences or some other marketing garbage, but it feels more like a blatant cash grab.

If reliving an old journey is your thing, why not just play the original again without all the unnecessary bells and whistles? Is it really worth shelling out more cash just to see Estelle and Joshua in HD glory? Consider all the things you could do with that money instead of dumping it into yet another fancy retro revival. Whatever.
