living with the nintendo switch oled: it’s complicated

So, I’ve been stuck with this Nintendo Switch OLED for a year now. You know, the one that everyone was hyped about for no apparent reason. At first, I thought, “Wow, pretty colors! This screen is actually nice.” But then, reality struck. Do I even notice the difference half the time?

Honestly, it’s mostly just me playing Mario Kart and losing to some 8-year-old in Russia. Don’t get me wrong, the device isn’t bad, it’s just that sometimes I wonder why I even bothered upgrading from my old chunky Switch. Was it worth the extra -insert exorbitant amount of money spent here- dollars? Maybe for that one friend who just loves tech and convinced me the visual upgrade was “life-changing,” but for a guy like me…? Meh.

There are days when I sit there, peering at the screen, squinting to see if the lighting looks less busted than it did before. And yeah, the colors pop. It’s like the console wants to scream “LOOK AT MEEEEEE! I’M SHINY!” Sorry konzol, I guess my heart just isn’t listening.

Now let’s talk battery life. You’ve got this brighter, bigger experience sucking the life out of the battery quicker than I can say “another charging cable lost.” (I lose things… a lot.) I’m tethered to outlets more than I’d like to admit, which, honestly, defeats the whole idea of portable gaming.

Then there’s the joy of carrying this “not-so-pocket-friendly” gadget around. I tried to fit it in my backpack along with my life’s essentials (snacks, water, and another snack), and, surprise! It’s practically its own third wheel. Add in the paranoia of scratching this fancy screen… well, guess I never leave home without its custom case. It’s like having a mini baby to look after.

Anyway, it’s shocking how reliant I’ve become on this darn thing. Even with all the mumbling and grumbling, those late-night gaming sessions wouldn’t have been the same without it. So yeah, maybe the Nintendo Switch OLED has wormed its way into my tech-riddled heart, but that doesn’t mean I won’t keep side-eyeing it. My eyes still hurt. I need coffee. Ugh.
