I just saw the announcement talking about the new Marvel’s Wolverine trailer. Seriously, I didn’t even know they were conjuring up a new one. Marvel can’t sit still, can they? (Anyway,) the trailer, what can I say, it’s buzzing with the usual promises of ‘next-gen gameplay’ bells and whistles. Everyone’s all hyped up like it’s the second coming of clawed vigilantes.

Okay, picture this — the screen shows our stoic anti-hero, Wolverine, like he’s just walked out of a gritty 2025 streetscape, claws out and all. It’s like they threw a ton of cash at the graphics to make every muscle twitch and hair strand visible. But hey, they always nail the visuals. Flashy, with that perfect amount of brooding intensity that gets the fans all misty-eyed. Marvel’s usual panache, I guess? But then again, looks aside, I’m wondering if it’ll be more than just eye candy.
You hear all those boastful snippets saying ‘gameplay revealed’, like some divine revelation. But what about substance, huh? (I’m thinking of the times we’re left wrestling with clunky controls, not to mention stories as thin as rice paper.) Wolverine slashing through the baddies in slow-mo looks great and all, but if it’s just about flashy combat repetitively thrown at us for hours, I’d rather binge-watch some documentaries on cats… which sounds weirdly peaceful.

The narrative has to punch harder than Wolverine’s knuckles. He’s not just a fighting machine, right? We all want the existential, tortured soul bit—like, is he just a pawn in some larger game? Hungrily, we consume character dilemmas past his relentless brawlish rage. I hope they dive into his core much like in those classic comics where you feel every ounce of his struggles. (Or is that wishful thinking?)
So here I am, juggling my skeptical excitement with the new age Marvel gives us every few years. Don’t get me wrong. I might just be part of the chorus buying into this one if it delivers something way beyond my shallow expectations. Could this Wolverine trailer be a defying moment for gaming, (again)? Or just another face in the glossy crowd of game launches?
My eyes still hurt. I need coffee. Ugh.
