is the new steam deck a threat to playstation?

I just stumbled upon this hilarious thought: is the new Steam Deck really here to take down PlayStation? Like, imagine David and Goliath, but in the gaming world. Well, if someone calls Valve the underdog, I’m rolling my eyes into the next dimension. Seriously, they already threw a wrench into the whole PC gaming scene, and now, a hand-held? Totally wild.

So, picture this – you’re lounging on your couch with the new Steam Deck in hand. The thing’s got guts, let me tell you. It’s carrying a custom AMD APU, and if you’re like me and can’t stand the jargon, just know that this means it’s packing a punch. Kind of feels like it’s shouting, “Look mom, no hands!” while flipping off traditional consoles. And it’s cute watching everyone scramble to download their Steam libraries onto something they can take to the toilet. Oh, don’t pretend you haven’t thought about it!

But wait… let’s chat about PlayStation. I’ve been a loyal fan since the days of Crash Bandicoot, so naturally, this makes me wonder if my PS5’s feeling nervous tucked under the TV. The PlayStation’s got exclusives like nobody’s business – throwing Spider-Man and Horizon: Zero Dawn around like confetti. Does Steam Deck have exclusives? Ha. It’s got a thousand Steam games in its arsenal, but I guess it’s a different party vibe altogether. (Plus, who else thinks of Steam’s summer sale as gaming Christmas?)

I read some random stats about these gadgets and my mind did loops trying to wrap itself around how fast tech changes. Just a few years ago we were marveling over the Nintendo Switch, and now I bet kids born then could beat me at Smash Bros. on a Steam Deck while doing calculus.

What’s my take? It’s not like Sony’s dropping off the face of the earth any time soon. But Valve’s definitely shaking things up – giving us a new way to carry our backlog of unplayed games. (Seriously, who has the time?!) Own both maybe? If your wallet’s itching and can stand the heat – by heat I mean the scorching prices.

My eyes still hurt thinking about how far we’ve come in gaming tech. I need coffee. Ugh…
